Yesterday I had my welcome class. This was a five hour class for everyone going into the "foods" role at the Disney resort. Unfortunately, I had the earliest start time... I had to be there by 7:30 to check in. Because I was going to the park for the class, I chose to ride the bus.
Disney provides us with a free bus pass we can use anytime! Plus, with my Commuter Assistance card, I get a dollar for every day I take the bus!
So I woke up at 5:45 and of course I'm so anxious, I can barely eat. I left the house an hour early! 6:30! The night before we waited at the bus stop for over a half an hour! We were told they come every fifteen minutes... Anyway, I wanted to leave early enough in case the bus was late. I didn't want to take any chances. But I got to the bus stop at about 6:35 and waited for another half an hour... I guess I better re-check that bus schedule. Finally, the bus comes and I get to sit next to a crazy.. There are a lot of crazies on the bus.
Luckily, I found some other students from the program to walk with because I wasn't sure where to go. After we get off the bus for the Disneyland stop, we walk through all the shuttle stops and head toward the right. There was a long fence of tall bushes, and we had to walk through a little archway. On the other side of the bushes, we went through security and had to swipe our Cast Member IDs.We met our leaders for the day at a flagpole. This "backstage" area (backstage meaning behind the scenes areas and breaks areas) was behind Main Street and Tomorrowland. If you've ever paid attention during a Monorail ride, you can actually see this area. You will see buildings that say "Cast Scheduling" and "Cast Costuming".
Our leader "Geoff" took us on a little tour through part of California Adventure to show us a few examples of the different types of restaurants they have at the resort. There are the table service restaurants, character dining experiences, quick-service restaurants (which is mine), food carts, outdoor vending, and even banquets. They also provide room service in the Disney resort hotels, but they call this "Auxiliary Food and Beverage" because it sounds better than room service.
We later went to a building somewhere behind Tower of Terror in DCA, where we took our course. It was a green office building, and we went into one of the classrooms on the top floor. The course is called "Food and Beverage Core Cafe" and it is given to those with the following roles: food and beverage cashier, custodial busser, server, hostess, food prep, and maybe a couple more that I can't remember. However, the course was mostly about food safety (which I already learned when I had to get my Food Handler's License to work at the Cheesecake Factory). We never touched on anything that related to being a food and beverage cashier, which is my role.
Because we were getting paid for the day, we got to take a quick fifteen minute break. When we went back to the room, we continued learning about food safety. Then we touched on the other keys of Disney's values. Disney's four keys include Safety, Courtesy, Show and Efficiency. After we talked about each one, we all got to get our schedules and shoes! Cast members in food or custodial get a free pair of work shoes! Wooh!
Our leader took us into the Cast Costuming building, inside which is an entire shoe store, full of strong grip black work shoes. I picked the most plain pair...

Cute, huh? Unfortunately, I didn't get my costume yet. That will be tomorrow, on my first day of on the job training.
After getting my shoes, I got to receive my schedule for the next two weeks! On the front of the page it says "Royal Street Veranda - Cashier". You know that little window where you can walk up and buy gumbo or clam chowder in a bread bowl? Yeah, that's where I'll be working.
I train on this Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. I then work Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and next Monday, Tuesday, Friday and Saturday! Woo! All of my shifts are from 6-8 hours!
I went home after the class and had a nice relaxing night with my roomies, and caught up on my Pretty Little Liars!
Talk to you all real soon!
